ADMIRALTY ISLAND LIME SPATULA

Origin: Melanesian, Admiralty Islands, Manus people (Provenance: Private San Francisco Bay Area Collection)

Period/Date: circa 1900-1920

Materials: Hardwood, ocher pigment, Betel nut residue  

Description:  This rare form lime spatula is presented on a custom bronze display stand. The standing armless figure has classic features with an expressive face with open mouth. A cavity in the top of the head may have been utilized in the betel nut chewing process or may have had an insert (hair or a stingray barb)? It has acquired a complex varied patina turning from brown to red. The lower half and its spatula blade has a dryer lighter patina. Old glued mend at the knees.
