ETHIOPIAN AMHARA EMBOSSED LEATHER SHIELD

Origin: East Africa, Ethiopia, Amhara people

Period/Date:  Early 20th century

Materials: Buffalo Hide

Description:  Here's a fine example of its type, featuring concentric rings of deeply embossed geometric decoration.  It has near perfect symmetry with a rolled rim and solidly applied handle.  Unlike some of the court and regalia shields with ornate silver decoration, this one was indented for battle to begin with and absent of the shiny stuff.  In good condition with rich color and patina.  Other examples can see been in most reference books on shields and African weapons.
