NEW GUINEA ABELAM BABA INITIATION MASK

Origin:  New Guinea, Middle Sepik, Prince Alexander Mountains, Abelam People      Provenance: Collection of Mary Memory Santa Monica CA.  Acquired in the 1980's via personal friend Jean Michel Cousteau (Jacques Cousteau son).  Cousteau acquired it from the National Museum in Port Moresby.. 

Period/Date:  Likely 1930-40's

Materials:  Plaited fiber and natural earth pigments

Description:  A classic style old "baba" mask which has seen lots of use.  It retains about two thirds of its yellow, lime, and charcoal encrusted and oxidized pigments.  It has an old handwritten original paper sale/ inventory label.  In good condition with few if any broken stitches.
