19TH C. TOBA BATAK ANCESTOR FIGURE SUMATRA

Origin: Indonesia, Sumatra, Toba Batak people     (Provenance: Found in an old UK collection)

Period/Date: 19th century

Materials:  hardwood, libations, sacrificial likely blood patina

Description:  Quality old Batak sculpture is very collectible and hard to find now.  This male ancestor figure "debata idup" with conical head has defined facial features with well-formed relief-carved ears.  It has a wonderful semi-encrusted patina from years of use.  Its arms are resting on the abdomen having very defined hands and fingers, above a phallus.  It was like made as a pair, coupled with a female.  Characteristic in Batak sculpture, its lower half is roughly hewn and blocky.   Its surface has rhythmic adze and tool marks.  In good condition with no loss or restoration.  Presented on a custom bronze base.
