NEW GUINEA MIDDLE SEPIK RAMU BETEL NUT MORTAR

Origin: New Guinea, East Sepik Province, Ramu River   (Provenance: Private Illinois collection, Ex. Gallerie Flak Paris 2009.  The mortar is published on page 48 in their exhibition catalog "Papouasie" of Sep 9th- Nov 14th.)

Period/Date: Circa 1930's or before

Materials:  hardwood, residue

Description:  Featuring dual ancestor spirits with curled noses touching the base.  Deeply carved, showing long wear and use with a semi-encrusted patina.  There's remaining encrusted residue inside the bowl, separated and blistered from age.  Good condition.
