COOK ISLAND CORAL MORTAR/ VESSEL

Origin:  Central Polynesia, Cook Islands?     (Provenance: French collection.  Old label indicating it was given as a gift L.R. Lempriere)

Period/Date:  Late 19th century

Materials:  white coral

Description:  A unique specimen carved from a single chunk of coral and hollowed in the center.  Its use is largely unknown but feel it was likely made for the tourist trade in the Victorian era?  Richly textured and tactile surface.  In good condition retaining old typed label.
