NEW GUINEA LUMI WAR SHIELD

Origin:  New Guinea, West Sepik Province, Torricelli Mountains, Lumi People    (Provenance: Private Midwest Collection)

Period/Date:  At least 1940's, possibly older 

Materials:  Hardwood, rattan, fiber, charcoal paint, tapa fiber, traces of yellow pigment

Description:  This fighting shield features a deeply carved spiraling design with elegant curvature.  It has five sets of pierced lugs for the carrying handle, having all of its original rattan loops and attachments intact.  Its surface has primitive tool marks with an overall dry varied patina.  In very good condition.
