LARGE MIDDLE SEPIK IATMUL "MWAI" MASK

Origin: New Guinea, Middle Sepik, Iatmul people      (Provenance: Collection of Mary Memory Santa Monica CA.  Acquired in the 1980's via personal friend Jean Michel Cousteau (Jacques Cousteau's son).  Cousteau acquired it from the National Museum in Port Moresby.)

Period/Date:  Decorative 1970's

Materials:  wood, rattan, Cowrie shell, Nassa shell, Boars Tusks, fiber, clay, charcoal, lime and ocher paints

Description:  We typically don't sell decorative art like this.  However, it was part of the Cousteau pieces and from the National Museum in Port Moresby.  More importantly it is large "pretty" example with fine paint and is in excellent condition.
