NIAS CARVED & LIDDED PERSONAL BETEL NUT BOX
Origin: Indonesia, Nias Island (Provenance: recently acquired from a private collection in Victoria BC Canada. Field collected in 1956)
Period/Date: Likely 1930's, possibly older
Materials: hardwood, stain, iron nails
Description: This fabulous box with sliding top lid is compartmentalized for betel nut and chewing components. Each corner of the box has a seated Adu zatua ancestor figure. I would best describe its design elements as having both traditional and borrowed. For example, the lid with cool relief-carved hand appears to borrow from 19th century maritime sailor art, like the heart placed inside a wreath (sailor valentine). Merchant and Whaling ships would stop to trade and take on supplies which is likely how some of these elements became to be used in their art. It has acquired an overall dry varied patina from long personal use. The hollowed out box is carved from one piece of wood by the way and the interior walls are carved out not added and applied.
