UNIQUE EARLY 19TH C. "UNFINISHED" MAORI PATU HAND CLUB

Period/Date:  Early to Mid 19th century

Materials:  Hardwood

Description:  This club was originally purchased 15 years from Mark Blackburn of Mauna Kea Galleries.  The Maori literature talks about the "mana" contained in such an artifact that is unfinished, being a result of the craftsman killed or dying before completion.  It is highly unusual to see a club that unfinished like this.  It has an attractive classic shape with faceted sides.  There is an old glued mend to the top edge which appears to incorporate and old world wood square repair similar to that seen on Hawaiian bowls.  On the reverse side there is the remnants of an old paper tag.
