PHILIPPINE IFUGAO PRESTIGE SPOON W/ TWO FIGURES

Origin:   N. Philippines, Luzon, Ifugao    (Provenance: Found in an old Collection in Silver Springs Maryland)

Period/Date:  circa 1900-1920        

Materials:  hardwood

Description:  This handsome old spoon with standing figure has a rich use patina and is surmounted by a seated figure on the top of the head.  It has a number of noteworthy nuances and features like the relief-carved vertebrae and other details.  Its bowl has an elegant curvature with the back side inscribed with inventory number on the black.  It shows evidence of long use and generations of handling.  The small figure is missing arms and there are small areas of gnawing on the surface of the spoon all of which happen a long time ago and well patinated from traditional use.
