SUPERB OLD RAMU RIVER BETEL NUT MORTAR

Period/Date: Early 20th century, possibly older
Materials: hardwood, betel nut lime residue
Description: This fabulous little mortar has dual back-to-back ancestor figures and is presented on a custom wood base. Its semi-encrusted surface and patina is very impressive with multiple hues and thickness from long use. The male ancestor figures are finely carved with mask-like faces having bent knees with hands placed at the abdomen. Based on its classic style, age of the wood and patina, we feel it dates no later than 1920. In fine condition.
