RARE RHADE/ EDE' FIGHTING SHIELD (VIETNAM HIGHLANDS)
Origin: Central Highlands of Vietnam, Montangnard Region, Rhade/ Ede' people (Provenance: Recently found in an old Southern California collection)
Period/Date: mid-20th century (possibly older)
Materials: hardwood, metal, fiber cord, wooden pegs, traces of congealed blood
Description: This scarce fighting shield is coveted among seasoned collectors, yet are seldom available for sale. Made of hardwood having a radial fluted pattern with a metal central boss. Its classic pass through arm handle structure is skillfully made of separate pieces and secured with wooden pegs. Note that the longer hanging rope is circa 1960's "Vietnam war era and how it was hung on the wall by the previous owner. In excellent condition showing obvious wear, use, and age. It has acquired a varied patina over the years and a rich semi-encrusted patina on its handle.
These shields were also used in the Water Buffalo sacrifices which were held twice a year. There is an example in the Quai Branly collection which is older and in fair condition but is the exact same size.
