ABSTRACT TRANSFORMATIONAL VANUATU CANOE PROW W/ HUMAN FIGURE

Origin:  Melanesia, Vanuatu, Northeastern Malekula Island     (Provenance: Old French collection)

Period/Date: Early 20th century, possibly older

Materials: Hardwood

Description:  This rare and inventive abstract example was made by a skilled old-world craftsman!  It has a dry varied semi-encrusted surface with salt-based patina, featuring a classic bird with a delicate winged flying fish on its back.  When viewed vertically, however, an abstract human figure is dominant.  For example, the flying fish becomes the face which is supported at the chin by wing-like arm (see photo below).  Old tool and adze marks inside the lug attachments.  In great condition with slight old loss to top of bird head.  Presented on a custom metal stand.

Note:  A related example sold at Sotheby's Paris for 31,950 euros (June 2008  lot 54)

Dimensions:   Length 15 3/4"  (40 cm), Width 4 1/8"  (11 cm)
