C. 1800 STONE-CARVED ABORIGINAL VICTORIA CLUB WITH INCISING

Origin: S.E. Australia, Victoria   (Provenance: Found in an old UK collection)

Period/Date:  Late 18th- Early 19th century

Materials:  Very dense heavy Indigenous hardwood

Description:  I'm attributing this club to Victoria.  It is long, heavy and has warm rich color.  About 40 percent of its surface is incised, the handgrip being most prominent.   This is a business club and not a digging stick.  Its tapered point is fire-hardened for thrusting and piercing.  Its stone-carved motifs resemble a belt of pendulums with attached balls in a peck work technique.  Its beehive-like handgrip is bold, textured and beautiful.  There are areas along its shaft with attractive rippling.  In good condition with minor old chips and hairline age separations in the wood.  Note that there are remnants of tiny two old iron nails about 11.5 inches above the pommel.  The display stand is included but it was not custom made for it.
