NEW GUINEA UPPER SEPIK WOGAMAS CLAN BOARD

Origin: New Guinea, Upper Sepik,       (Provenance: Acquired from the descendents of television actor "Lane Smith" of Northridge California.  His collection of primitive art was assembled in the 1970's. )

Period/Date:  Likely late 1960's

Materials:  Hardwood, earth pigments

Description:  This graphic clan board retains vibrant pigments and features a smiling ancestor (or cultural hero).  Deeply carved overall.  Layered ocher pigments and lime especially around the face.  Dry varied use patina.  Good condition with minor loss and pinholes.  Attached label on back reads "New Guinea)
