YAKA MALE FETISH FIGURE

Origin:    Central Africa, Dem. Rep. of Congo, Yaka people   (Provenance: Ex. Fily Keita- Los Angeles,  Ex. Jean Paul Agogue- Paris )

Period/Date:  Likely circa 1920s

Materials: yellow-tone hardwood

Description:  This male ancestor figure has a slightly turned head with charming quirky face.  His parted mouth is swept to the side, having an overall downward gaze.  There are pierced holes in the nose, ears and the top of head.   Semi-encrusted surface especially on the face and inside the arms.  The artist used a hot poker to achieve the darker accents on the lower body, mouth and jaw.   Lustrous varied patina from use and handling.  Presented on a bronze base.
